Get Ready For A Good Time At The Great Dorset Steam Fair!
For 41 years the Great Dorset Steam Fair has been a favorite among followers who make the long trek each year to the beautiful Dorset countryside in the small little village of Tarrant Hinton. This festival is a place to find incredible steamer exhibitions, horse drawn steamers, tasty food, delightful entertainment and unbelievable music. Every year the festival attracts more visitors than the year before and 2009 is expected to be the largest gathering yet! The Steam Fair is a great way to show off the history of steamers and how far they have come over the many decades that they have been active. There are many proud owners of these steamers, both big and small. Steamer collectors take as much pride in these steamers as a person parading around a vintage automobile.
The Great Dorset Steam Fair takes place every year in the month of September. 2 adults and 2 children are allowed to enter with the purchase of a family pass. If you have additional children, you will have to pay an extra price. You are allowed (and encouraged) to camp at the fair in the land provided next to the fair itself. You will have to pay extra for the camping fee, but it is a great experience for the family to make a weekend out of it, pitch a tent and camp out under the stars. If you aren’t interested in sleeping inside a tent, those who aren’t used to “roughing it” can sleep in a motor home or camper as long the total length of the spot (a car and camper combined) does not exceed 24 ft in length. You are also welcome to sleep in your car (which may be wise due to the unpredictable weather of Dorset). You can even bring your dog along for the weekend as long as it is kept on its leash at all times and has a good temperament. The Fair opens at 8:00 every morning and closes for the evening every night at 1:00 in the morning. If you chose to camp at the sight, you are asked to be respectful of the families with small children who are also camping by keeping your voice (and profanities) down to a minimum. For your convenience, there are showers, toilets, mini shop for toiletry necessity and gasoline available. There is also a 24 hour medical facility available with a medical staff as well as firemen and policemen to insure that everyone has a safe time.
